1998 Baby Photos

Well it is another baby season and I would like to thank the people that have contributed these pictures. Even though this is a squirrel page, as rehabbers we are not just limited to squirrels, so you may see some other baby pictures besides squirrels on here.

badgerbadger
The first pictures came from The Squirrel Connection in Iowa, these are baby badgers. They are approximately 28 days old. From what she tells me they are to have as little human contact as possible once their eyes open, which they are doing now. She will have to wear a pillowcase over her head while she handles the babies from now on. She also warns that these babies are VERY PUGNACIOUS and smell a lot like a skunk. Hopefully we will have more pictures of these babies later in the season.

This is an update on the baby badgers that were sent to me the end of April. They are nearing 4 pounds and the female is a bit larger than the male. They are eating well and it seems that everything they eat is going into their front feet and toenails. They love to dig at their bedding and anything else.

After eating they usually have a wrestling match which eventually turns into a "I'm mad now fight". When they are out of the cage they follow Anna around and chew at her feet and socks. They do have stuffed toys that they do mock attacks on. She is very careful not to startle them as they are getting agressive towards her and they definately do not like strangers. The noises that they are making are grunt, hiss, growl and snarl. They were put in their digging cage on May 3 and they will be left alone except to feed and maintain the cage. Release will be in about 2 months.

Anna adds that they have not given her one health problem. She has wormed them and that has been the only medicine that they have needed. They are just a very tough animal with very firm bodies and all muscle.

These pictures below were sent to me by our South Carolina Connection. I really do appreciate her sending these to me so that I could post them for everyone to enjoy.

luke bunny

This was a bunny that had received some head trauma and that is why he was in her care, thus the name "Luke Skywatcher". It appears that after a lot of hard work, she has gotten him well on his way to being a wild bunny.

sniffle

This sweet little Eastern Grey Squirrel came in with her sister which did not make it. The mother was trapped and relocated and her babies left behind. The babies were found 4 days later and both were suffering from insulation inhalation. The insulation was removed from her nose for 2 weeks. That was 3 years ago and she is now semi-non releasable. She has to spend the winters indoors due to the damage done to her lungs by the insulation.

ajcoon
"Quiet Thoughts"
by Beverly Armstrong

How would you like to live in a cage
That was just about ten feet square.
With no toys to play with and nothing to do --
Just you and a bed and a chair?
Oh, sure you'd be fed (the same thing each day)
You'd have water (unless they forgot)
And since you would never be going outside
You wouldn't get cold, or too hot.
But oh, you'd be lonely just sitting alone
With no one to talk to all day.
You'd remember the trees, and the grass and the breeze,
The places where you use to play.
You'd remember your friends, you'd remember the sky,
And games and strawberries and sun,
And you know you could never go skating again
Or go swimming, or ride bikes, or run.
You'd get mad and scream and throw things around,
You'd kick and you'd pound on the wall,
And your owners would scold you,
And say to themselves,
"He isn't a nice pet at all!"
The more you got mad, the less they would like you,
The less they'd remember to care
About if you had water or if you got fed
Or if you were lonely in there.
And then you would know what it's like to be kept
As a pet when you're meant to be free,
And you'd listen when wild things are trying to say
"Please don't make a pet out of me!"

flying squirrel Who can resist the sweet faces of the Southern Flying Squirrel? racoon Who says that racoons don't know how to have fun?

8 racoons
The 2 racoons on the outside of the pen had been for a walk down by the creek, the 6 in the pen wanted to go too. They had just been fed live crayfish and the 2 outide of the cage found one crayfish that was hiding under the edge of the pen. The ones on the inside wanted out and wanted more live crayfish.
