Grey - Black Phase Squirrels

The pictures on this page are of Black Squirrels that were photographed by Paul in Guelph, Ontario, Canada and are copyrighted by him. Please do not use the photos without his permission.

Many thanks to Paul for these photos, because without him, this page would not have been possible. He will send more photos as he gets time. These photos may take some time to load, please be patient.

Some people think that black squirrels are a separate species of squirrel. In fact they are just a different color of grey squirrel. Grey and black sqiurrels will mate and there can even be black and grey squirrels born in the same litter, although the black gene does seem to dominate more.

The colors of grey squirrel not only include black, but also albinos. The white squirrels with dark eyes are believed to be a different species which were brought to the states from islands off of Hawaii back in the 1940's.

These photos were taken at Riverside Park.

Here is a squirrel that Paul has named "Chippy". She lives in his backyard. Notice the coloration of the body and tail. Guess this one would be real hard to miss.

The photo below is a new photo of Chippy taken in January, 2001. Paul went for a long time and did not see her, but she is back now and she looks just as healthy as ever.
